MIOSHA's Budget for FY 2008:
October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008
Presented below is MIOSHA's
budget for Fiscal Year 2008 as published in Michigan Public Act
118 of 2007. Even though their budget is $26,198,200, the agency
actually doesn't cost Michigan taxpayers a single penny. $12,197,000
is paid to MIOSHA by federal OSHA to partially cover the cost
of conducting inspections.
The remainder of the budget
comes from fees and taxes on businesses. For example, $7,848,700
comes from the Safety and Education Training Fund which is funded
by a portion of the Workers' Compensation Insurance Premiums
paid by Michigan businesses. In other words, every time a Michigan
business pays their Workers' Comp insurance premium a portion
goes to fund MIOSHA.
In addition, MIOSHA actually
makes money for the State! Since MIOSHA conducts the inspections
and issues the fines, the State of Michigan gets to keep all
of the MIOSHA fine money generated. Depending on the year, that
ranges between $4,000,000 and $5,000,000+!
